Heart of Glass: Diane Von Furstenberg x Google Puts Augmented Reality on Runway

by Shirley Brady

Call it Projector Runway. Diane von Furstenberg made a splash with her collection that debuted Sunday during the New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2013 shows — and not just for her chic prints and flowing palazzo pants.
The New York-based designer also put Google Glass augmented reality glasses on the catwalk, with her models wearing the high-tech specs and capturing the action on the runway (more on that below).
Also wearing the web-enabled specs at the show: Google co-founder Sergey Brin and von Furstenberg (who addressed Googlers on her vision back in 2006) herself.
According to the press release (via Marketing Land), it's a first-of-its-kind collaboration to promote the evolution of Google Goggles/Project Glass:
Today we’re thrilled to collaborate with the visionary and celebrated designer Diane von Furstenberg. For the past week, we’ve been using Glass to capture the DVF creative process from entirely new perspectives. Soon you’ll get a glimpse into what it’s like to design, prepare and experience the DVF show at New York Fashion Week through Diane’s eyes and a few other views. The short film ‘DVF through Glass’ will be released on Thursday, September 13 on the DVF Google+ page and Google’s YouTube channel. We will also post exclusive images from Glass to the DVF Google+ page live during the show. #DVFthroughGlass
“I am so excited to introduce Glass to the fashion world and use this revolutionary technology to give everyone a unique perspective into fashion.” – Diane von Furstenberg
“Beauty, style and comfort are as important to Glass as the latest technology. We are delighted to bring Glass to the runway together with DVF.” – Sergey Brin, Google co-founder.
Watch the DVF runway show from the 45-second mark and check out the Google+ gallery to check out the computerized (and now color-coordinated) $1,500 glasses' runway debut.

Double models wearing them:
And at 1:14 in, you can clearly see Google cofounder Sergey Brin himself in the audience smiling and wearing the glasses:
This is my favorite scene, when you can see Brin watching (and wearing the glasses) as one of the models wearing them comes out:
The at the end, Brin, Furstenberg and someone I should know if I knew fashion take a walk all wearing the specs:
