EXCLUSIVE: FALZ THE BAHD GUY MAKES DEBUT ON COKE STUDIO AFRICA TO COLLABORATE WITH TANZANIAN RAPPER JOH MAKINI

Top Nigerian BET award-winning artiste Falz The Bahd Guy of the hit singles: “Soft Work”, “Ello Bae” and “Celebrity Girlfriend” featuring Reekado Banks will be making his debut on the upcoming fourth season of Coke Studio Africa. He will be paired with Tanzanian hip hop king Joh Makini of the hit song “Don’t Bother”, returning on the show for a second time. The two artistes, expected to fuse sounds of hip hop, pop, R&B, afro-beats and highlife, among vast genres, will be produced by France-based producer DSK (originally from Ivory Coast).
Speaking exclusively in Nairobi during the recording of the upcoming season, Falz said, “It’s my first experience on Coke Studio Africa and I know that it’s going to be great. Being paired with Joh Makini from Tanzania gives our fans a mix of sounds and a rich blend of cultures. I am honoured for the recognition I’ve received in and outside Nigeria. Through Coke Studio Africa, I am looking to work on more collaborations across Africa as I plan to build an international brand,” adding, “Kenya is beautiful – I am enjoying myself and also learning Swahili and I really love the language and the sound of it.”

Joh Makini on the other hand said, “So far it’s been great working with Falz. We will make some amazing songs. The music fusion has been very different but I love it! Our producer has presented us with sounds I never thought I would ever make, fans can expect to discover a completely new sound from Joh Makini this year.”

Joh is currently riding high with the single “Perfect Combo” featuring his Coke Studio Africa 2 collaborator Nigerian singer Chidinma. He said, “Perfect Combo was produced by Kenyan producer R-Kay and actually recorded during my last time on Coke Studio Africa recording in Kenya. We had been sitting on the song for a while so we finally decided to shoot the music video in South Africa by the director Justin Campos and release it.”

EDITOR’S NOTES:

Coke Studio Africa is a non-competitive show seeking to bring together, and showcase the diversity of African musical talent. Additionally to Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria and Mozambique - the upcoming season 4 of Coke Studio Africa now includes artistes from Ethiopia, Togo, Ghana, Cameroon and Ivory Coast. The show gives artistes from all genres, eras and stature the opportunity to work with some of the best local and international music and production talent.

Folarin Falz Falana a.ka Falz the Bahdguy is undoubtedly one of Nigeria’s most multi-talented music exports in this decade. Clinching the BET Award for Viewers Choice Best New International Act in 2016 and a 2015 AMVCA Award for Best Male Actor in a comedy is show enough for his vast talent in both music and TV. Falz’s trademark sound is cool, funky and pop paired with a little street vibes. His rap style is a fusion of witty lines, local dialects and comedic tones, setting him in a lane of his own.

Joh Makini is one of the most respected East African hip hop artistes. Fusing English and Swahili in his music, Joe is celebrated for his unique freestyle ability, word play and seamless flow. The success of his 2006 single Chochote Popote earned him recognition as a bonafide Tanzanian music star. He has since taken Africa by storm, releasing hit collaborations with some of Africa’s finest artistes including Navio (Uganda) in Gere remix, King Kaka (Kenya) in Najipendelea and AKA (South Africa) in Don’t Bother.

DSK is among the top African producers on the show this season tasked to engineer music fusions from Coke Studio Africa 4 artistes. Others include Madtraxx (Kenya), Bushingtone (Uganda), Masterkraft (Nigeria), Chopstix (Nigeria) and Maphorisa (South Africa).
