As part of activities marking the 2013 Social Media Week
holding in Lagos for the first time, ThistlePraxis Consulting is organising an
event on Sustainable Development on the theme: 'Open yet
Unconnected? Social Media for Sustainable Development' scheduled to
take place on Friday, February 22, 2013
at 1.00 pm at the PEGs Learning Hub, Odunlami Street,
Lagos, Island, Lagos, Nigeria.
The
90-minute event will feature a panel discussion of experts drawn from various
parts of the world - linked by social media - to review the role of social
media in connecting individuals across the world in order to foster the
promotion and attainment of widespread sustainable development. Amongst other issues,
how our increasing interconnectedness across the globe aids learning
opportunities and influence on conservation of natural resources, protection of
the environment and growth of businesses will be critically reviewed.
Confirmed
expert panelists include: Martin Neureiter, CEO, The
CSR Company, Austria; Aman Singh, Editorial Director, CSR Wire, USA; Ini Onuk,
CEO/Lead Consultant, ThistlePraxis Consulting, Nigeria and Dr. Ken Amaeshi,
Director, Sustainable Business Institute, Edinburgh Business School, United
Kingdom. Other local participants include: Ms. ‘Dayo George, Head, CSR and Communications, British American Tobacco
(BAT) and Ms. ‘Lola Odedina, General Manager, Corporate Communications
& External Relations, GTBank whom will discuss the role of social media in
enhancing the practice of social responsibility especially in effective
stakeholder engagement.
Registrations are still open for physical
attendance with limited seats available at the venue. Participants will comprise business leaders, executives, academics,
social agents and other stakeholders who will be present at the venue and tuned
in via the internet. The event will be streamed live online whilst
conversations will be featured using the official twitter hashtag #smwSustainableDevelopment.
In a statement released by the organizers,
the Lead Consultant/CEO; Ini Onuk noted that, ‘we believe that participants will find the conversations stimulating and the
intellectual company very rewarding. This is our offering to lend our voices to
make the 2013 Social Media Week a success as it is held in Africa for the first
time’.
Amongst
other outcomes, the event seeks to engage professionals in pragmatic discussions
about how social media is practically influencing the practice of Corporate
Social Responsibility & Sustainability in the world, with a focus on
Africa. Other conversation drivers will border on how Social Media can be used
to inform and mobilize people to care for the environment and show greater commitment
and responsibility. The role of Social Media in the attainment of the United
Nations Millennium Development Goals (UN MDGs) will also form a major objective
of the event.
