When Steve Jobs announced in 2011 that Apple would be using 175 acres of land in Cupertino, Calif. to build a 2.8 million-square-foot office complex, the expectation was that it would be completed in 2015.
It's looking like a mid-2016 opening is more likely. But as plans for a groundbreaking move forward, the company has recently submitted a revised plan to city officials, offering more detailed (and pastoral — see above) glimpses of the futuristic facility for the Apple-obsessed.
Meanwhile, Apple is moving forward with plans for new offices — if however more conventionally designed — in Austin, Texas.
The blog Austin Towers, which has published renderings for the new campus, says the new Apple facility will have seven buildings accounting for 100 million square feet, and will cost around $304 million to build.
Apple says it intends to make the Austin project as environmentally friendly as possible. Among its plans: keeping all the large trees on the site in place; three parking garages to preserve a good deal of existing land; and minimizing the amount of land covered by asphalt and concrete.The Austin Business Journal reports that the campus will also include “a 600,000-gallon rainwater harvesting structure.”
The project is expected to be completed in 2021.
Beyond the U.S., Apple is preparing to move into its new offices in Tokyo's 54-story Roppongi Hills complex.
And if you’ve never had a peek into Apple's current headquarters, you're now in luck — sort of.
