Nokia shows off new Lumia

Nokia has unveiled the latest model in its Lumia range of smartphones, toting wireless charging features and running on Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 8 operating system.
The Lumia 920 boasts enhanced camera functionality and can be charged wirelessly through a separate charging pad. Its touchscreen interface can also be operated through a pair of gloves.
However investors appear to be unimpressed by the new handset as the Finnish handset manufacturer’s share price plummeted by 11.5% to $2.51 per share following the announcement. In May, outgoing Nokia chairman Jorma Ollila promised that the company’s new smartphone, tablet and hybrid devices would appease investors and help the company on its road to recovery.

Nokia has identified camera functionality as a core area to differentiate itself in the smartphone category and the Lumia 920 uses imaging technology which allows it to take in five times more light than similar smartphones, without the use of a flash.
“Low light photography has been a weak point for smartphones,” says Nokia executive vice-president of worldwide products and chief research officer Crawford Del Prete. “By applying its rich expertise in imaging, Nokia has created a best of breed experience for everyday use.”
The device has a 4.5 inch screen and 32GB of storage. A lower-end model, the Lumia 820, has also been announced and sports a smaller 4.3 inch screen and 8GB of storage.
The Lumia range of smartphones saw their prices slashed in half back in July this year, only three months after their initial launch. Sales of the devices were also dented by Microsoft’s announcement that its Windows Phone 8 operating system would not be supported by older handsets.
Nokia lost its title as the world’s largest handset manufacturer to Samsungearlier this year and has been struggling financially, attributed to its slow entry into the smartphone market. In its most recent quarterly results it posted a net loss of $1.7bn, double the loss expected by analysts.
